How to get paid faster as a tradie

Doing the work is only half the job. Getting paid for it, on time, is what keeps the business alive. Late payments are one of the biggest cash-flow headaches in the trades, and most of it comes down to habits you can change.
Here are the simplest ways to shorten the gap between finishing a job and the money hitting your account.
Invoice on the spot
The single biggest fix is to invoice the moment the job is done, not next Sunday night. The longer the gap, the colder the customer's urgency and the easier it is for them to forget.
If you can invoice from your phone before you leave the site, do it. Same-day invoices get paid noticeably faster than ones that trickle out a week later.
Make paying dead easy
Every extra step between the invoice and the payment is a chance to delay. A bank transfer means the customer has to log in, copy your details and remember to do it. A card payment link lets them pay in seconds, right off the invoice.
The easier you make it, the sooner you get paid. Offer card payment and you remove most of the friction.
Take a deposit up front
For bigger jobs, a deposit protects your cash flow and commits the customer before you buy materials or block out a day. It also means you are never fully out of pocket if a job goes quiet.
Collecting the deposit when they book is the smoothest moment. There is more detail in our guide on how much deposit a tradie can charge.
Set clear terms, and put them on the invoice
State your payment terms plainly: due on completion, or within 7 days, whatever suits you. Vague terms invite vague payment. Clear terms on every invoice set the expectation from the start.
Include your payment details and a due date on the invoice itself, so the customer never has to ask how or when to pay.
Chase politely, and automatically
Most late payments are not people refusing to pay, they just forgot. A friendly reminder a few days after the due date clears most of them, without any awkward phone call.
The trick is to make reminders automatic so you are not the one having to nag. ONARA Ops sends invoices customers pay by card, tracks exactly what you are owed, and can remind them for you, so you can stay on the tools.

Due on completion, or within 7 days, is common for domestic work. Larger or commercial jobs may run to 14 or 30 days. Whatever you choose, put it clearly on the invoice.
