A guide only. "Left for your time and profit" is the price after your material and cost outlay, so it still has to cover your own hours. Not tax advice.

Quoting off gut feel is how good tradies end up busy but broke. This builds a job price the proper way: materials with your markup, labour at your charge-out rate, anything you pass on, and GST if you're registered.

You'll see the total to quote and, just as importantly, what's left for your time and profit once your cash outlay is covered, so you know the job's worth doing before you send it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out the profit on a job?

Add up what you'll charge (materials plus your markup, plus labour at your charge-out rate, plus anything you pass on), then take off your cash outlay (what you actually paid for materials and other costs). What's left covers your time and your profit. This calculator does it as you type.

What's a good profit margin for a trade job?

There's no single right number, but many tradies aim for a gross margin (after materials and direct costs, before their own labour) that leaves a healthy buffer once their time is paid for. The key is to know the margin before you quote, not find out after the job.

Should I mark up materials as well as charge for labour?

Yes. Sourcing, buying, carrying and warranting materials is real work and real cash tied up. Marking materials up (commonly 15% to 30%) covers that, and your labour rate covers your time. They're two different things.

Do I add GST to the quote?

Only if you're registered for GST, which is required once you turn over $75,000 a year. Tick the GST box and the calculator adds 10% on top. ONARA Ops handles GST automatically on every quote and invoice.
